Landfill in Sandy might buy Exit C&D

OSNABURG TWP - Operators of American Landfill in Sandy Township are weighing an offer to buy the dormant Exit C&D Landfill in the 7000 block of Fairhill Street SE.
Waste Management, which owns American Landfill, would not expand waste-burial operations on Exit C&D’s property. If it buys Exit C&D, it would extract soil and clay to use at its existing solid-waste landfill.
The Stark County Health Department has been overseeing the dormant Exit C&D facility.
“We have a lien on the property for the amount that we had to spend on the closure,” said William Franks, Stark County health commissioner. “The cost of the closure is what we spent to have someone come in and close it.”
During a discussion Friday with Osnaburg Township officials, a Waste Management representative said his corporation is not committed to buying Exit C&D in the event the latter goes up for sale in the near future.
“We are not in position to be pushed into a decision that may not be good for us,” said Jerry Rush, Waste Management’s regional senior district manager. “We don’t want to rush into it. We are doing an evaluation to see if there is any value in this at all to Waste Management.”
Exit C&D Landfill was operated by area resident Tim Williams, who was not at the meeting Friday. There is concern that Williams could sell the Exit C&D site to a bidder from out of the area.
“As much as I dislike American Landfill, I would rather have you in control ...,” Osnaburg Trustee Donna Middaugh told Rush. “I don’t want an outside concern coming in.”
